Howard Garns, an architect from Indianapolis, is credited with developed the puzzles we know as Sudoku in 1979.  He called the game Number Place.  By 1986 "Number Place" had reached Japan where it was renamed "Sudoku" which means "single number."   In 2005 the puzzles went international under the Sudoku name which is trademarked by puzzle publisher Nikoli Co. Ltd. in Japan.
