Could you image asking your students to write a 25 page book with at least 8 pages of diagrams, pictures or illustrations as their final project?  Self-publishing might sound like something only the rich and/or vain could do, but like many other things, it has become a relatively cheap prospect thanks to technology and it'll probably only get cheaper. 

Would you like to write your own text book for one of your classes?  In the past, set-up costs made printing a small quantity of a books extremely expensive.  Recent advances to digital printers has made it possible to create very small quantities or professionally bound books at a very reasonable price.  Here's a short video about the Self Publishing Process. Businesses like DiggyPOD are popping up all over the internet that offer this service to any bibliophile with a hankering to write a book.  Below are some reviews of a few self publishing services.  Chances are this technology will only become more accessible.

This online book publisher has lots of easy to follow resources to help you make your book.  Tutorials, a how to video and plenty or other resources can be used to help you make your book.   They offer a wide range of book styles and pricing plans to fit just about any need, and they'll even help you sell your book. They also have a section of their webpage that's dedicated to educator projects like class books and portfolios.

LuLu.com
Check out their guided tour to better understand what LuLu.com has to offer.  This is a popular website and they are very well rated.  They will help you design and layout your creation as well as printing and shipping it for you.  Initially it can seem overwhelming but they do offer a number of resources as well as a community of resources.  They also offer services for creating and selling music CD's and educational videos.  Even if you don't go with them as your publisher of choice searching their online store can give you plenty of ideas:  http://www.lulu.com/buy/

Amazon CreateSpace
Not wanting to be left behind, Amazon.com bought CreateSpace so they could offer self publishing services for books, music and videos.
