Human beings have been trying to organize their collective knowledge since the beginning of time. It’s only natural that with the advent of the internet we would also have the advent of online encyclopedias to try to organize all the knowledge that’s now available.  Here’s a quick review of the most popular ones:

The old reliable Britannica can be accessed online, but of course there is a fee once the free trial period ends. You can read more about the services they offer at their website: http://www.eb.com/index.html

This easy to use reference website is familiar to most students.  It's supported through advertising and is free to the user.  The site also includes a Thesaurus, Encyclopedia and web search engine. You can check it all out for yourself at:  http://dictionary.reference.com/

This website offers you a whole list of additional online encyclopedia resources including the ones listed above.  It also has it's own search engine and plenty of categories to browse.  Check it out here:  http://www.ipl.org/

Another advertiser supported resource that includes much more than just an encyclopedia.  The include an Atlas, Dictionary, Year in Review and even some Quizzes in their long list of resources:  http://www.infoplease.com/
