It's probably the most popular word processing program of all time, and most of our students are very familiar with it.   To put it simply it is the only typewriter they have ever known.  Below is a list of the basic skills 7th graders should have in Microsoft Word:

Basic Keyboarding - Every 7th grader takes a typing test.  Last year the average typing speed was about 32 WPM (Typing Speeds Graph).
Formal Communications - All classes type up two block format business letters.
Formatting Text - Students demonstrate changing fonts, text sizes, text colors, alignment, and formatting.
Inserting Tables and Graphics - Students use tables and insert graphics in their documents.  They also format tables and graphics.
Save as a Webpage in Word - Students create simple web pages with text and image hyperlinks using Word.
Drawing Tools in Word - Students us the drawing toolbar in Word.
Saving Word Documents to our Network - Students save their Word documents to their network H: drives.  They also use the X: drive to share information in group projects.
